The Rise to Health Study
a Carnegie Mellon University Study
This study is conducted alongside a “sister” Rise to Health study at Georgetown University focused on young adults, so that together we can learn how health develops across adolescence and early adulthood.
The question of “how to be healthy” is not a simple one. Many researchers now believe that health can be shaped by experiences that occur early in life, like during teenage years. Our goal is to better understand how various experiences can affect young people’s health, including:
What to expect
If you are eligible and choose to participate, we will also ask your caregiver (e.g. parent, guardian, someone who played a parental role in your upbringing) to participate in the study with you.
Frequently asked questions
-
Find out if you are eligible to participate by completing this 2-minute screener!
-
You’ll complete a survey, visit our lab for health measurements (including a small blood draw), and take part in short daily check-ins for 15 days. During those 15 days, you’ll also wear a watch that tracks sleep and activity and take photos of your meals. One year later, you’ll come back for a shorter follow-up.
-
A certified phlebotomist will draw a small amount of blood (just 1.6 tablespoons, about the same as at a doctor’s visit). You might feel a quick pinch, and sometimes there can be mild bruising. If you’re nervous, you can ask for numbing cream.
-
Each day for 15 days, you’ll use your phone to complete:
A very short morning check-in about your sleep (<1 minute)
A short evening check-in (~7 minutes) about your day, thoughts, and feelings
You’ll also do a brief memory task (like a simple game).
-
No. You can skip any question you don’t want to answer, and you can stop participating at any time. This will not affect your compensation for the parts you completed.
-
You can earn up to $140 total for completing all parts of the study. You’ll be paid for each part you complete, and if you finish everything, you’ll also be entered into a raffle to win one of four $200 prizes.
